Why are these to only two options? The first option is an extreme, the second is getting there. Why not a moderately powerful console with a focus on hardcore gaming, but tries to cater to the casual audience as well?

Those are the only two options because the market that Sony and Microsoft own expect MUCH more from them the next generation in terms of specifications, graphics, online and power. At least when you hear the negativity about Wii U being underpowered.

IF they make a console not much powerful than Wii U, then Wii U will get third party ports and get the core-gamers back.
