I haven't really played it for a significant length of time. I don't own a 3DS and have no plans to acquire one in the near future, and I could grab it on an emulator, but I have liked precisely 0% of the 5th gen 3D games I have gone back and replayed.

Okay, Crash: Warped was playable. But that's the only one. I can't stand 5th gen 3D design philosophy. That was before they understood how to actually control a 3D world with a gamepad.

yeah, my general distaste for the PS1/N64 era is widely documented, and this is precisely why.  Gameplay was functional but felt sluggish, and as an additional point I also feel that the hideous blocky monstrosities were a huge step down, graphically, from some of the crisp sprites of the late NES era.

Great gateway generation, but it was baby steps into the third dimension, it wasn't an olympic stride.

That's exactly why I loved the generation though. Everything was new and there were lots of games trying different ways to deal with the extra dimension of space. You're right that those games haven't aged well as they were mainly experiments in 3D, but at the time every other game felt innovative.
