Well actually meat is the only place you can easily get the complete proteins your body needs to run correctly and you to be healthy. Soy "can" supply the proteins but it needs to be fermented for about a year or more before the body can process it. (There was an article written up by a nutritionist about the facts and fiction about soy use I will try to find it later.) And the way that soy is processed currently you get no nutritional value from any of it forms (even most tofu isn't made properly today), all soy does in introduce toxins into your system that does more damage then good. One of them is a neurotoxin that causes early on-set dementia.
Other than that to get the proteins any other way you have to eat certain amounts of certain vegetables in the correct amounts to get the proper nutrition. You cannot just through a salad together with some of the now in vogue items and live healthy, that is why some vegan look so sickly they are not getting the correct amount of proteins so their body can function normally. It just a lot of work that almost all people don't want to go through.
Though yes we do eat way too much meat in today society. We are only suppose to have a few ounces a day and that is enough to supply the body with enough complete protein to allow you to stay healthy. But most people prefer to go out and get fast food which supplies you with too many starches and too much protien especially if you eat there more than once a day.
