Drop the Vita and focus on the PS4. Thats what they need to do.

Next year should be the last year Sony supports PS3. After that the console should just get 3rd party support, which surely will be good for a couple of years, but Sony should try to phase PS3 out after 2014 at the latest. After 2013 Sony should focus solely on PS4 and Vita. They shouldn't drop the Vita - what for? Just make it profitable and I'm sure that the story of PS3 and a surge in sales is possible for this handheld when they cut the price. Remember, the development costs for PS4 will be 2-3 time higher than the costs for a PS3 game, so many developers won't be able to make this jump easily. Cost of a Vita game is much smaller than the cost of a PS3 game, so it should be supported, since in 2-3 years the possibility of profiting on PS3 will be significantly smaller, than on a Vita, which will still be attractive as the "current gen" console.

PS3 could start competing with PS4 if both Sony and 3rd parties stay on this console instead of going full steam on PS4 and it would canibalise the PS4 sales. Vita is a handheld so it's not competing with a home console, that's why Sony has to convince 3rd parties to switch to Vita instead of staying with PS3. Supporting Vita is even better for Sony, since they would not only earn money from games, but people would have to buy new hardware, so this means additional revenue for Sony. Just think, one AAA PS4 game equals 5-6 AAA Vita games. Vita projects will be petty stuff in comparison to PS4 projects, and having simmilar price at retail will earn money. Vita just needs a couple good games and... good luck and good will. I hope it can make it.

PS3 isnt the issue, its added profit. The Vita is the larger issue, because it desperately needs to sell and get some notable IP's to move hardware. If it can't it is only a hinderance to Sonys future profit like it is to the PS3 currently.
