They should've bought a big chunk of Squaresoft probably around 93/94 and compromised on the CD-ROM thing. 

The two companies were very close anyway with Nintendo publishing Final Fantasy in the West on the NES and Squaresoft making Super Mario RPG, which at that time was one of the few games an outside studio got to make using Mario. 

Nintendo owning a chunk of Rare + Squaresoft + a CD/cart combo N64 would've been lights out. 

Yeah, I dont think the PS1 would have been that successful if Ninty had managed to keep Final Fantasy.
