Again, nothing intricate about the characters in Final Fantasy. The world is destroyed, Cid dies and Celes attempts suicide to show us the hopelessness of the situation. The character has a tiny amount of depth and development but it's hardly intricate. We're talking about JRPGs here, not Dostoyevsky.

To be honest I think the worlds of Final Fantasy VI had much more of an intricate, unwritten story than final fantasy IV, (just to have something to compare to).

They are more intricate, but there is so much more unwritten as well. Examples are Terra, Shadow, Setzer. It has been a long time since I last played, but these characters have so much pent up backstory when they tell their stories or when their stories are told. And each character is so very different from another. They also seem more rooted in our reality than those in FFIV for instance.
