Wii was already spiraling into obscurity before WiiU was even announced. Just look at the massive YOY declines it was seeing from 2009-2011
2009: Down 5 million with a price cut
2010: Down another 5 million
2011: Down 2 million in the first half of the year before the WiiU was announced and that was with the price cut in May
Wii's problem wasn't the knowledge of a coming successor, it was lack of SW.
