Worst high profile consoles would have to be Sega CD, Sega 32x, Atari Jaguar and Phillip's CDi although that wasn't entirely marketed as a video game console first, so maybe the CDi gets a pass and falls into the same category as the Apple Pippin and 3DO as failed consumer electronics entertainment boxes (overpriced, "not a video game console" consoles).
What made all those awful was lack of or poor software support, something that will not be an issue for the Wii U as at bare minimum, it will see a catalog of top quality Nintendo releases throughout its life cycle.
