I doubt that Nintendo is going to keep the DS going for another 2 years.  Most likely next year will be the final fiscal year of Nintendo supporting the device.  It may also be the same year that Sony discontinues the PS2.  So, I don't see the DS ever making it past the PS2.

but i thought it already had,i see a few threads a day, what so we are thinking spring next year anf no more DS or PS2 will be on the production line.i've been impressed by the pick up of the DS i thought it was finished, nintendo could keep churning them out if they wanted to by the looks of these holiday sales

Yes, it was a pretty good upswing, but that was mostly because of killer deals during Black Friday.  Don't get me wrong, Nintendo could continue to make the DS for another couple of years if they truly wanted to, though I'm sure sales would be only ~1.5M-2M a year by that time.  However, Nintendo doesn't really have a record of selling a console too many years after its successor has been released, nothing like Sony.  Looking at handhelds, specifically, the Gameboy was discontinued 2 years after the GBA was released.  And while the GBA was discontinued 4 years after the DS was released, this was only because it was only 3 1/2 years old when the DS was released.  That's why I'm guessing 2013-14 is when it will be discontinued.
