A good competitive fighting game, not a good party game.
MAJOR flops are relative to expectations. $300k * optimistically $30 to the dev (minus marketing, retail, distribution) = 90 dev-years ($100k per employee including insurance, tax, premises, equipment). Studio formed in 2009 so let's say 3 years of development. Was the staff really under 30 people? I can't find the credits list.

Didn't you mean it the other way around? It is a good party game (it's easier to pick up than Smash) but the current balance makes it less fitted to the competitive fighting scene.

It looks a lot harder than Smash to be good - so many moves, the button combinations are more complex, and the strategy is deeper. With Smash any button you press will give a good result. Brawl was developed with no regard for competition but PSASBR was made with it in mind.

Play Smash Bros with me or any of my siblings and see how good a result you get by just pressing any button.

or one of these levels of players http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX0utHVPghc :D
To say that smash brothers is a game you can button mash in and win is worse than saying the same thing about street fighter/tekken/MK because in those games you can't button mash your way off the stage and die on your own.
Also regarding PS all stars, I wonder seeing the sales of the first game being rather poor so far would that damage any chances of seeing 3rd party characters rolling into the game for a sequel? I mean Smash bros didn't get Sonic or Snake until the 3rd game after it had made over 10million in sales.
