As someone who's has had to deal with Nintendo a few times over this issue, I can tell you that you don't have to pay. 

I only paid once, and that was when I spilled water on my 3DS.  My negligence, so I paid.

That's not a contradiction, it's a distinction.  You're just so consumed with being negative that you can't even see it.  The OP is saying if your console bricks or is stolen, breaking you're own console due to negligence isn't covered by any company anywhere.
