Smart investors research a company before throwing money at it.

There's your problem right there.   Not only are most investors not all that smart but very, very, very few actually research the companies or the mutual fund (collection of stocks) they are investing in.    Most get their advice 3rd party (personal investment advice, mainstream news, other investors.

Go ask a tech investor anything about the company they invest in, 99% of the time they'd be lucky to quote anything more than the About page on their web site.

Yeah to be honest that does sound about right. I remember all the investors raving about Nvidia's Fermi chip, yet all the engineers said "Seen it before; it'll fail." What happened? It turned out to be power hungry and crap...

Now we're on the same page.

Investors are like greedy little kids....with money.   They just want to be told what is hot and what is not and what will earn a return as quickly as possible.   If acomapny is doing well but isn't growing rapidly, investors won't want it because their purchase price and sell price would likely be the same or very little difference.
