But, it is what it is. Maybe Nintendo just wants to see BOTH of their handhelds outselling both of Sony's and Sony is content to see their sole console outselling both of Nintendo's.

Probably will. All that advertising for the 3DS is actually helping the original DS. There is lots of consumer confusion out there.
