I don't really think that's a fair comparison.
The $500-$600 PS3 was competing with a $250 Wii......
Wii U pretty much has no competition right now. You could compare it to the 360 launch though since it didn't have competition at launch either.
Looking at it this way it really shows how well the Wii performed, launching a year later than the 360 and going head to head with the PS3 launch. Wow.
