No, you'd still have problems.
You'd still have the challenge of ship vs. sold. Your comic distributor only deals with shipped, not sold. As comics routinely flood the market and are "dumped" this would be a problem. Especially since when some comics are dumped in the retail channel, they have a tendency to find their way into the trash or as excess inventory.
You'd get a number no more accurate than we have with games and gaming systems.

You're dealing with an industry that isn't run by big chains like video games so the comics shops orders to the distributor are actually closer to their sales ( and a lot of comics shop actually have their customers preorder their comics too.)
The time of the 90s with publishers flooding the market and the collector boom is over.
The best comics these days have a circulation of 140-150k or so....
