Microsoft is established now, they don't need a headstart.
They can outspend Sony in virtually every way too (courting developers, marketing, taking a loss on hardware, etc.), they make $5 billion in profit a year and spent $8 billion just to buy Skype, lol. They will spend to take over the living room, count on it.
