Nintendo actually already did that, in fact, it was 4 Swords that had us asking for something like that for Mario to begin with. Legend of Zelda: 4 Swords Adventures

Ther's nothing "New" about Four Swords Adventure in a way Super Mario Bros. on Nintendo DS was "New", nor gameplay, nor sales wise.
