I actually submit that the segment that's sticking to free/$1 games are either people who wouldn't be interested in any other type of game in the first place or, much more commonly, are not seeing other types of games that would attract them. By that, I mean that the game industry is largely not creating the type of title that these people think is worth actually paying for. I further submit that: 1) this is a failing of the game industry as it currently exists, rather than of the market, and 2) few companies can subsist if they permit gaming to come down to free/$1 dollar games, asI do not believe the AAAA market is in any way sustainable, and I know that relying on $1 games is not a viable plan for anyone beyond the hobby developer. .. |
it's late, i need to get to bed. i might come back to the rest of your post tomorrow but for now i just want to focus on this one part.
on my wife's side of the family (as i have none to speak of) i have quite a few youngens that come to holidays. 2-3 years ago i saw mostly DSs and a couple PSPs. this holiday (thanksgiving) i saw only itouchs and a couple ipads. these kids used to like "real" consoles. the 11 year old took about a 30 second insterest in my vita when he saw it was "touch enabled" then quickly went back to showing me the roller coster he made. lot's of riders were puking. he was soo happy.
..also, he paid for the ipad with his own money. it wasn't a gift. he saved up his allowance and worked some odd jobs specifically to get an ipad.
i'm sure there are consumers as you describe them on smartphones/tablets. ..but it isn't exclusive by any means. i can count 5 kids in my own family that i've personally seen shift away consoles in the last 2 years.
