Counterpoint: when has the successor to a market leading console launched a year of more before the competition? The answer is either "never" or "once" (if we discount the Dreamcast...).

You're right, but that's what makes WiiU's situation so interesting.  Never has the successor to a market leading console launched first, particularly from a company whose 1st party games are indisputably the strongest in the industry from a sales perspective.  This makes WiiU a wildcard, so there's no historical evidence that we can reference.

However, if I were a betting man I would say that it puts it in a pretty good position.  Companies aren't suddenly going to abandon PS360 development for their successors when they are starting at a zero install base, and this bodes well for WiiU, which will likely be able to benefit from those development environments (sans a few games, of course) while having the mammoth benefit of Nintendo's exclusives.  Add to that the fact that Nintendo will surely be able to endure price drops for the console by next holiday if necessary and its future appears quite good IMO; even if WiiU isn't the runaway victor of the 8th gen.
