Here is a question for those with a Wii U: is Nintendo Land going to blow up big? Wii Sports pretty much made the Wii when it went viral with the casual crowd. Seriously, I can't tell you how many non-gaming adults I had come into work and tell me about this crazy new game that told you if you were over-weight and it let you play tennis and how they went out and bought one the next day. Does anything with the Wii U have that kind of potential?

I hear Nintendo Land is a lot of fun but fun doesn't always translate to casual interest.

Nintendo Land won't take off like Wii Sports did. There some things fundamentally different that will not allow it to sell as much.

The first thing is simply, the name. Nintendo Land.

Wii Sports defined the Wii console. Nintendo Land defines Nintendo the company, not the Wii U itself. It is like Smash Bros. in terms of combining the world of Nintendo into one game, but it does not have instant identification of Wii Sports.  If I were to ask the question "What is Wii Sports", a person will say a Wii game where you can play tennis and golf etc. BAM, Quick understanding of concept.

Can you do that for Nintendo Land? No.

Wii U will stay in stock and will never be sold out again once we hit next Spring. Isn't it crazy how we all acknowledge that Wii U cannot surpass the Wii in hardware sales? Why are we all so accepting of this FACT? Shouldn't we all expect Nintendo to create the games necessary to make Wii U sell 125 million units? Just something to think about. Either way, I hope that in the very likely case that Nintendo does once again make giant mistakes and release games we don't necessarily want, they will then grit their teeth and make the titles that will sell those consoles and get EVERYONE, not just gamefreaks, excited about video games.

Honestly, I think the Wii U can pass the Wii but that requires some significant mistakes by Sony and Microsoft ...

It sounds odd but I think of the Wii U as (sort of) being in a position similar to what the Wii would have been in had they released in 2005 (and not been penalized for releasing too early), and the XBox 360 launched in 2006; with everything else about the systems' first 2 years on the market remaining essentially the same. The net result is a market where the Wii would have had 16+ million more units sold, and the XBox 360 would have had 8+ million fewer units sold, when decisions were being made about which platform games were going to be made on; and that 24+ Million unit swing would have had a huge impact on game development in for games released in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

It all comes down to whether Sony and Microsoft "screw up", and I've seen enough recent mistakes from both companies to think that there is a high likelihood of that. With Microsoft, I have to say I like many of the concepts of Windows 8 and the Surface but both are garbage when you actually use them; and on Sony, the PS-Vita is probably the biggest mistake in handheld gaming since the N-Gage.
