Well to be fair most parents don't know shit when it comes to video game systems (the older ones especially).  Most parents were content on calling all systems Nintendo back in the 80s/early 90s.  My parents would call my Sega Genesis a Nintendo back in the day.  They then started using the common word PlayStation during the PS1/PS2 eras.  Now, some might the home console system a Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo.  I'm sure some call hand helds Game Boys still and now they finally learned the name DS.  So it comes to me as no surprise that they can't figure out the 3DS is the sequel to the DS.  If they named it DS2 then perhaps common sense might hit them on the head but they would still call it a DS.
