I don't see the gift option though when going to the Wii Shop channel on the Wii U. I loaded up my Wii and there was option to download and gift. On my Wii U (Wii Shop Channel) there is only download.

Yeah, I just checked my wii u as well, no gifting. Since i gave my wii to my brother after i transfered to wii u, I guess that means I cant play.

Yep, so perhaps having people wait on the Wii - Wii U transfer if they want to participate would be the best option. Wait till after the Secret Santa is over then do the transfer.
