I think there are errors here and there with connectivity. It happened to me once last night and then went away (re error code).
Once you connect the WiiU to your Nintendo Club account, you'll automatically be registered and get the points. BONUS ANSWER: Finally, if you got a deluxe version, you'll get the points for the packed-in game in a couple weeks automatically as well, based on a post-play survey.
