It does hurt but considering that Nintendo knows they don't really have a major seller to push outside of New Super Mario Bros, they are gambling on a slow build up instead of having to put out a lot of consoles and possibly look like they aren't doing well by not being able to claim not selling out.
Also, Nintendo is still working on easing into the online system issues so not having that many Wii Us go online at once is something I am sure their networking staff don't hate.
