Using a different market and a different company as an example, there is no reason why Research In Motion should have ever bought QNX to have their own operating system for their phone. In my opinion that money would have been far better spent on a custom distribution of Android that was built to meet the needs of their core-users; which would have meant dramatic increases in security and integration with business infastructure.
