Neh you should find a Wordpress expert who knows the right plugins you could use to make your homepage more attractive.. It has little to do with coding.. Well maybe some tiding up, display: none on a few unneccesary elements on your pages..
There are plenty of plugins who can make the top stories a bit more attractive
And you should adjust the right login widget cause its way too easy to hack the site.
