I am going out on a limb and suspect he meant that in order to beat out the PS3 or 360 within the next 12 months or financial quarter, that the Wii U will need more exclusives.
It is a given that it will get first party exclusives, although the first few on track aren't really aimed at the "traditional" audience that has made the 360 and PS3 successful. The Wii U will sell decently but to win out, the system will need to start being able to advertise that it has exclusives beyond Mario in order to build a base to fortify if/when the other next gen systems drop.
