Finally, again, the economy is quite different today than it was six years ago.  While people are still willing to spend money for the holidays, you're not going to see the WiiU - or a newly released PS4/NeXtBox - hitting remotely close to $9000...

This is so true. When I visited America during the holidays in 2006, everyone was crazy spending (even the people I was staying with).

When I visited them again in 2008 (this was before the crash), all they could talk about is how they don't know if they will have a job, how fuel is expensive, how this is expensive. I perosnally found it amusing as petrol comapred to Australia was DAMN cheap still. They were so worried about their financial situation that they would not even spend $5 on a pack of 24 coke cans t walmart. To me that was like a no brainer don't think twice as 24 pack of coke in Australia was about $30 at the time.

I guess the point I am making, if there were signs back in 2008 of people starting to worry, I can only imagine what 2012 is like in the USA.

Well that's actually part of the economy going down. People don't buy anything until Black Friday because it's extremely cheap. Before people would buy electronics anytime of year but now most people prefer to wait for Black Friday.

People buy things all the time here in the US whether it be holiday season, tax return season or the big electronic sales for 4th of July...

All year round people here in the US buy $500+ iPads, $200+ smartphones and spend $100+/month on phone plans. No idea where you get this idea that the country gets stingy for 11 months out of the year.

People don't have money because they waste it all on the things I just mentioned. That and feeling the need to drive these stupidly gigantic gas guzzling SUVs and then complain about gas costing too much.

Of course not all people wait for Black Friday, but part of the economy crash and this new records every year is do to some people waiting. Hell I would wait a couple of months for Black Friday before buying a TV, because is way cheaper than the normal price.

People have less money, that means they can't buy electronics until those prices are extremely cheap.
