In mathematics the law of limits would apply here. Either you have nothing or an infinite amount of something, in this case energy, since the universe needed energy to come into being it would be the infinite limit. (There is also a negetive infinte limit but it doesn't apply here) And only a finite amount was used to create the universe, there is still a lot of energy (an infinite amount) outside of the universe. (I favor the closed universe theories.)
