Of course there is a map, but you can't see other players (unless you get an UAV). Maybe it's a matter of preferences but I hate playing split screen for 2 reasons. 1) It takes half the screen which is annoying to me, and even though the gamepad is obviously smaller than a TV it still plays quite nicely (From what I've seen). 2) Not knowing where your friend is it's a lot better than knowing, you know like an online match.
Nobody is arguing that the selling point for the COD crowd will be local MP, it's just that a lot of people (myself included) think is something great. Whether you like it or not, it's your own business.
