I will agree with you that first week wouldn't matter much, but imagine this scenario: Blops: Declassified is a good game and the multiplayer is awesome. A few "die hards" or "casuals" pick up the game and start playing it at school/on bus/at work/wherever just to get their multiplayer CoD fix at any time or just to play a game they have on their system. Rabid cansole only CoD fans see other people playing it and enjoying it. This spreads worth of mouth since they're CoD fans , and boom goes the dynamite, rapid purchases.
Instead we get a game which no one will be playing for very long, so that scenario listed above, despite how improbable it would have been, is now gone.
