no, you're forced to use the gamepad as a helper once you have more than one player. so you'd have use wiimotes.

I see, messing up the NSMB2 co-op mode wasn't enough for Nintendo. So essentially, people have to choose three player mode to play two player mode without the Gamepad.

Incorrect, but I'm curious enough to boot up the system to check.

My friends and I played 4 player multiplayer with 4 wii remotes, and there was no mythical 5th player. You have the option when you start if you want a gamepad user or not.

*checking*

EDIT: When you select multiplayer, it simply asks you how many remote players there are (1-4) and it informs you that you can enable "Boost Mode" any time you'd like (that's the gamepad play).

EDIT2: So what superchunk was trying to say was that you cannot use the gamepad as a regular controller in multiplayer. If the gamepad IS being used, it is forced to be a helper. Don't you dare spin this into something negative.
