I bought a pro-controller, but now I'm thinking I shouldn't have. The gamepad has the same buttons and really its better to play with that with the TV off even.

I'm definitely going to prefer the GamePad for single-player experiences, but I was hoping for a good multiplayer voice chat solution as well. The Pro controller doesn't even have a headphone jack (unlike the GamePad).

That's my point... play the gamepad on the multiplayer games too. I used it for COD after using the pro controller. gamepad >>>>>> pro controller. same exact controls, but playing on that scree vs the TV was actually a lot better.

Good to know. I'd like to know how well it works with Assassin's Creed though, since it'll probably be the only multiplayer game I'll bother with over the course of next year, unless I decide to try out Monster Hunter (a game in which the controller won't matter at all).
