That really sucks. What happens if the system bricks and you need to buy another one? You're essentially screwed.

It would be nice if people would learn how to pay attention.  It was stated early on that it would be possible to access your Nintendo Network from multiple sources (including your phone, tablet, computer and other system), but that it would not be available at launch.
