If you've never bought a system at launch before ...

Systems at launch generally have some problems. A good launch will generally have (most of) the problems isolated as software problems that are 'mostly' fixed by patching within a couple of weeks; a bad system launch will have a significant hardware problem that kills systems that isn't resolved for months.

A system freezing is generally not something to worry too much about as long as it doesn't happen regularly. If it is something that is common and/or reproducible contact Nintendo Support.

Things loaded up on the Wii U rather slowly at first, but after using it more, it wasn't going as slow anymore.  Just me?

Mine hasn't arrived yet so I don't know ...

My point was that systems have problems at launch and (if this launch goes smoothly) most of the problems will be solved before people open their Wii U systems for Christmas.

The huge firmware update won't be fixed. People won't even be able to play it on Christmas.

Maybe, maybe not ... but a one time system update is hardly the end of the world
