Some HDTVs just don't stretch and fill the screen properly with 480p widescreen. Your TV probably just sucks with component cables, but very much likes the HDMI. Some of my Wii games would play with a black bar around all 4 sides of the screen on my TV, and some would be fine. At my parents place all my Wii games looked fine in 480p. Some TVs just stretch the inner part of the image and not the sides, which makes some kind of fish tank look to it. WiiU doesn't upscale, so it all depends on how your TV handles component vs. HDMI.
