MS said back in the day it was a first step in the business. They lose billions of dolars all the time (ultimate tv, kin, zune) they can afford that kind of investment with their huge pockets, they ended up second in that gen, they brought shooters and PC games to consoles and the best infrastructure to buy and play online (and charge for it) those are key factors in the present gen.
