Japan uses Kanji, Katagana and Hiragana (sp? on the last one). China uses Chinese (that's the name of the written form). Kanji is extremely close to Chinese but not the same. Katagana and Hiragana look similar but are unique to Japan. They are basically a way of not needing to learn as many kanji as they have less symbols and use combinations (where as Kanji and Traditional Chinese, every symbol is a whole word).
