Apparently this is a bigger start than usual, but the series as a whole is huge in Japan. As in Dragon Quest/Monster Hunter huge, albeit with a much slower burn.

200,000 cards sold at retail. Direct eShop downloads are unknown. Which makes me question where that 80k figure comes from.
