Why did Sony go with Super Smash Bros. too instead of Super Mario Bros. too?

Littlebigplanet has platformers and now karts.  When will this game ever sell?

it does ok but it's hardly record breaking...esp when compared to it's...ahem...source of inspiration.

atleast im playing an ...ahem.... far superior game. i have no need to care about sales when playing a game

I know that when you are enjoying a game, sales does not matter. But in the long run they do matter, because the more money Sony get from that franchise, the more support (and sequels) that franchise will get, making us, the gamers more happy :)

For example if the first GOW game would have sold like crap, a sequel would not exist; and even though it was an amazing game, we ( I ) would be very sad for not having a sequel (and the eventually sequel to the sequel, and prequels).

At least for now LBP is selling really great, but nothing spectacular.  It would be very nice to see an LBP game (and every other 1st party Sony game) to sell 10M :D
