It's a somewhar masochist relationship between us Nintendo fans and the company. We enjoy being robbed by the company like that, and in the other ways they rob us. Like the N64-era Wii technology, and the Dreamcast like Wii-U for over $300 USD.
Now on a more serious note, and to those who don't seem to notice that Galaki is joking: It's not only about demand, it's about prestige. If Nintendo lowers their prices, it will give a perception of an offering that loses it's value over time, that loses it's quality in comparison of newer products. That's also the reason Nintendo will never go into the $1 dollar-worth games like mobile phone games.
And they are right, because their quality is on another level.
