I think the main reason for that is to keep the console itself smaller, having that brick inside the console will increase the size a little too much. Nintendo is known for keeping their consoles small.


The's more to it then that, not only does it reduce heat but also the brick is a sort of safety measure for the console as if the power shorts out or has some sort of fault it saves your console from damage and all you need to do is buy a replacement adapter instead of replacing your console.
