Gave up on Dracula X: Rondo of Blood because I keep barely making it to the boss of the 6th stage and getting my ass handed to me.
Also gave up on Zelda II for years before finally going back to it when I got the limited collector's edition on the GC, and finally was able to beat the game legitimately thanks to the save-anywhere feature.
Edit: Other games I were never able to beat legitimately: Ninja Gaiden (the original), Snake Rattle & Roll, Star Wars on NES.
