I give online pass a thumbs up. Its to combat the used market and I think it does it in a fair way.
The tricky part, as you mentioned, is how can we apply this to single player games. I think that online pass should be used in single player games to get additional content. If the content is vital to the game, then this is a bad thing, but I have no issue with an online-pass unlocking a different (non-vital) character story arc to entice players to buy new. A lot of people will probably disagree with this because this does mean that the content is "on the disc", but fuck it. It will cost you $5 extra to buy it new and get the content, and that is worth it to support the developers.
