I play said Battlefield game on both PC and PS3. On PC I have all settings on low in addition to v-sync, triple buffering and framerate limited to 58. I still get massive problems. I'm assuming the weak link in my hardware is the dual core cpu. That said I still find the in-game frame rate changes ridiculous. On PS3, very little slowdown even though less than 30 fps, and no tearing that I've noticed. It runs so much better.

PC game sales don't add up to what current gen sales manage.

Do you actually have accurate data to back that up?

If you do then it'd be great because actual PC game sales data are notoriously difficult to find. This is especially true when over half the sales are from digital downloads that most large digital distributors don't disclose to the public.

No, purely an estimate based mostly on sales tracked on this website. If you look at this week's game sales for instance, you'll see it's dominated by current gen consoles. I would also say, if anything, saying over half of PC game sales are from downloads is on the generous side. Boxed PC games are always a good deal cheaper than their console equivalents. All the PC games I've seen I've been able to get cheaper through mail order than say online via Steam or Origin. Further, there's more piracy where PC gaming is concerned, which is going to hurt PC retail sales more than it does the console game divisions.

The sales tracking of PC games on VGchartz is terrible at best. You just need to look at Diablo 3 for an idea of how this works:

Diablo 3 on VGChartz:

2.76 million.

Actual first week sales:

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/diablo_iii_shatters_pc_sales_records_server_woes_postpone_real-money_auction_house_launch

6.3 million

This is sales figures direct from Blizzard, not shipments (you can't ship digital anyway). So the total for Diablo 3 on VGChartz is nearly a third of the actual first week sales. Even if you take into account the free passes to WoW players, the VGChartz total is only half of the actual first week sales.

Also, digital download sales in the US and UK have actually overtaken physical sales:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-03-23-digital-downloads-become-majority-of-pc-game-sales-in-u-s-and-uk

"The majority of sales in those regions are now digital. 51 per cent of all PC game sales were digital eight months ago in the US. Now it's going to be up to a split of nearly 60/40 in the US alone."

That was in March of this year so if the trend has continued (and I see no reason why it shouldn't), a much larger proportion of sales are from digital sources.
