I think the 3 will be closer to the reality of "Not many devs can use its full power," but it won't really matter. Devs will use each other's tricks and build offa each other's work.

Also, this time around anyone with a PS3 can install Linux, a Dev Kit, and start writing algorithms for the Cell. I am sure that will develop libraries.

If you mean useless nonproduction-worthy libraries then yes, I agree.

I mean math, AI, animation, memory management , message passing, and thousands of other possibilities. You don’t think the Open Source community can generate production quality software? You don’t think Linux is of high quality? How about gcc, or ImageMagick?

For pure graphics libraries, that will need to be done by Sony.

Open source software quality is heavily dependant on the quality of the people working on the project. Linux (and several other projects) is high quality because it is being developed by academics and many large corporations ...

For the most part, open source projects produced by hobbiests are poorly documented, have huge design flaws and inconsistencies, follow poor coding practices, are buggy, and are generally shitty.
