In the last hour I've discovered just how underrated Assassins Creed is.

How come? Based on the disappointing reviews or negative comments here on VGC?

Mix of both plus comments. The reviews especially in relation to those of the previous games, which are out-of-sync of my own perceptions of those games, and the comments which so far seem to be overreactions. Getting the game at midnight so hoping I don't find them to be right (really hoping the Mass Effect 3 ending is the only one where I find out the reactions were justified).

Interesting. But I guess it's expected this late in a generation? It's harder to wow reviewers who at this point are fatigued by so much repetition.

Anyway, how do you rate the previous Assassin's Creeds?

I love them all, even the first one very very much. But Brotherhood disappointed me a bit, having so many unnecessary features and nothing new that really improved the experience. (I haven't yet played Revelations).

In order: 1) ACII 2) Brotherhood 3) AC I 4) Revelations

I get what you mean with the first game, I was too busy enjoying it to notice how repetitive it was getting. Brotherhood was good for me but didn't hit the heights of ACII, the new features set it apart as it own game but it didn't have the same feeling as II. Revelations was the low point of the series (for me at least). Never used the bomb-making as it was really pointless, the Den Defence was major pain and the Desmond Memory sequences were the absolute rock bottom (can't believe they made DLC based on the gameplay elements in that).

Revelations should bridge the gap into ACIII, but you're not missing too much. It was biggest disappointment of the year on the site for a reason.

I was too busy too enjoying the first Assassin's Creed to notive the repetition! I loved it from beginning to end.

Now that you mentioned it something just stuck me. What I didn't realize until now was that the mission structure was superb in the first one. I loved how you had to report to that Assassin master after each mission and each time the story progressed forward and the mystic was revealed a little bit. So it gave a greta motivation to do another mission.

In comparison, the assassination missions in AC2 and onward end with just a short death sequence where Ezio utters something philosophical. So they don't give the same direct motivation to do another mission actually (but obviously there are tons of other improvements in the sequels).

I already own Revelations. I must own them all because even if one game happens to be weaker than the others I still enjoy it thanks to the historical setting and fantastic atmosphere, and "the flow". And now that I'm already prepared that Revelations has all this meaningless "fluff" instead of anything revolutionizeing, I will be able to enjoy it just for the pure AC experience.
