State and local sales taxes apply to just about everything but it does vary state to state.   Food purchased at a grocer is often not taxed by the state though  often locally taxed.

State taxes range from 3% to 7%.  Some items can also range from 1% to 10%.  Toss on local city taxes and rates can reach nearly 12%.

I can understand having 1 tax per state (like in Europe there is 1 tax per country), and I could understand having 1 tax per city (bigger cities need more money to run and taxes are a good wayto get it). Hell, here we have city taxes for services like collecting and recicling the garbage and traffic. But different taxes per county? I found it a bit too much.

Taxes are changed often.  Like I said, you can have state, county and city taxes.  Not only can that be touhg to keep up with changing sticker prices but iamgine how advertising would work.   You'd have to make a new ad for every single city in the US because what the cost may be in 1 city may not be the same just 5 miles down the road.

Does it mean that for something that costs 100 you could end paying 7+10+12% in taxes making it 129? Or only 1 or 2 but not all 3 can be applied at the same time?

You can have all 3 but it's rare that combined they exceed 11%.  Here in Flroida all combined never go above 9.5%.   It's 7.0% combined in my city/county.
