Correct. 5 of the 50 do not. But all cities (and/or counties) do.

State and local sales taxes apply to just about everything but it does vary state to state. Food purchased at a grocer is often not taxed by the state though often locally taxed.
State taxes range from 3% to 7%. Some items can also range from 1% to 10%. Toss on local city taxes and rates can reach nearly 12%.
It can be tough to pre-calculate total costs on multiple items but if you live long enough in the same area, you start to get accustomed to how much extra you'll pay.
