Fewer than 3,000.
But my point was that the U.S. armed forces are much larger now than they were back then, even at the height of American involvement in WWI (which weren't in in 1916, having entered the following year), and bayonets are still standard issue. I actually have no idea who won the debate, as I've reached my limit with this shit and didn't watch. But for a "clever line", this was a pretty stupid one.
